The correct way to dispose of old furniture

The correct way to dispose of old furniture

Furniture is a consumable item. Whether you are moving from an old house to a new one, renovating an old house, replacing new furniture or redecorating, you will face the need to clean up old furniture. Although the frequency of furniture replacement is relatively low, as most of the furniture is large and numerous, it would be time-consuming and difficult to dispose of it by yourself, and some of them are in good condition, so it would be a waste to dispose of them directly. Therefore, more and more people will consider using the second-hand furniture recycling service in the market.

According to the definition of the Environmental Protection Department, spring mattresses, bed frame sets, trolleys, bicycles, electric fans, sofas, dining tables and chairs, cabinets, refrigerators... etc. are all considered as bulky household waste. According to the "Public Cleansing and Prevention of Nuisances Regulation", furniture and miscellaneous items are not allowed to be disposed of on the street, and offenders are liable to a fine of $25,000 and six months' imprisonment. Therefore, there are four proper ways to dispose of furniture. Scroll down to continue...

Four proper ways to dispose of furniture.

1. Recycling

If the furniture is still in new or good condition, you may consider using the second-hand furniture recycling service in the community. The recycling organisation will refurbish and restore the furniture, and sell the recycled or old furniture in second-hand furniture markets or second-hand shops, or even donate some of the furniture to the needy or charitable organisations, so as to redistribute the available resources and achieve the objectives of sharing resources, supporting environmental protection and reducing waste generation.

2. Second-hand Sales

If the furniture still has market value, you can choose to resell it through social media or online platforms to recover the cost on the one hand and recycle the furniture to reduce waste on the other.

3. Donation

Donating furniture to the needy is also a good way to give back to the community and extend the life cycle of the items, practising sustainable living.

4. Disposal

Self-disposal

You can deliver disused furniture to the Public Refuse Collection Points managed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) or the authorised bulky waste collection point within the estate for disposal if required. It is recommended to communicate with the staff at the collection point to confirm the disposal time and quantity before disposing of the furniture, so that the staff can make available sufficient space for the furniture before bringing them to the collection point. Otherwise, the staff at the collection point may refuse to allow you to dispose of large furniture at the collection point. As a result of the passage of the municipal solid waste (MSW) charging, you will also be required to pay for the disposal of the furniture in the future.

Appointing a furniture disposal company

If old furniture does not meet the recycling criteria, many companies also offer a furniture disposal service. However, as the terms and conditions vary, the charge depends on the size, type, weight, transportation environment and location of each piece of furniture, and ranges from $100 to $1,000 per piece.
